MPS TO PROBE CLASSIC TYRE SAFETY FEARS
Members of the All Party Parliamentary Historic Vehicle Group – the classic
world’s voice in Westminster – are to discuss the dangers of classics using
older tyres at their next meeting. Group chair, Sir Greg Knight MP, confirmed that the topic is being brought up following concerns from classic clubs, and an ongoing petition to restrict the use of old tyres on buses and coaches following a fatal coach accident in 2012, in which a coach using nineteen year-old tyres suffered a blowout. Classic tyre specialist, Ben Field, says: ‘I would recommend not using tyres more than ten years old – even if they’ve been stored, the rubber hardens. ‘This is a very serious issue – we are talking about people’s lives here.’
