TIP OF THE FORTNIGHT
Find your IMEI without accessing your phone
One thing you didn’t mention in your otherwise informative feature on preventing phone theft (Issue 708, page 60) is that you can discover your phone’s IMEI without having physical access to it.
If your phone is an Android model, you should visit Google’s Find My Device page (www.snipca.com/54798), then click the cog icon. You’ll see the IMEI listed under ‘Device settings’ (see screenshot). You can also do this with iPhones, as long as you previously registered it. Sign into the Apple ID site (https://account.apple.com) and click Devices. But you’ll need to type a code that gets sent to another trusted device.
Don’t forget that the IMEI is printed on the box the phone came in, usually near the barcode. Also, sometimes the retailer will include the IMEI in emails sent after you purchase the phone. Another useful tip is to check you’ve got the correct IMEI by typing it into www.imei.info.
