Dollhouse Miniatures  |  Issue 108
What fuels us to collect miniatures? I have learned that it’s a complex mix of emotional, cognitive, and, at times, instinctual needs. Hence why it’s generally not our partner’s business how much we spend on minis. I heard an entertaining story about how a collector made arrangements with their carrier to leave the packages around the side of the house so their partner didn’t see them – even though they were still staying within their budget!
This proves that collecting isn’t just about having ‘pretty things’. It’s a way to create order, control, and personal meaning amidst our chaotic world. And when we finally find others that share our passion for the thrill of the hunt, well, that’s a bond that will hold strong.
Other layers of collecting include intellectual stimulation through historical research, emotional attachment to items with personal memories, and the pursuit of completing a set. Collectors are driven by a combination of pleasure, nostalgia, emotional attachment, completion, and social connection.
I would advise though, to set a budget! Or when you’re ready to sell something from your collection, (that you can bear to part with) use the funds to acquire something new. Have fun and keep making beautiful mini spaces!
