TRIM YOUR TUM and Boost Your Health

The larger your waistband, the greater the risk to your wellbeing. Join HFG’s NEW challenge and make 2016 the year you beat the bulge… for good

NEED TO LOSE WEIGHT? Step away from the scales and grab a tape measure. This year Healthy Food Guide is championing the latest expert consensus that your waist is a better measure of your health than your body mass index (BMI).

‘It’s a fact that shedding excess inches from your waistline can reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers,’ says HFG nutrition consultant Juliette Kellow.

But we know it’s not easy. So, to help you lose weight from your middle, we’re launching the HFG Get Waisted challenge. By following our monthly diet planners, cooking our recipes and stepping up your exercise regime, you can gradually lose health-threatening belly fat once and for all.

Taking up the gauntlet

Over the page, you can meet six HFG readers who have already accepted the Get Waisted challenge, and read about their weight-loss dilemmas plus the advice our experts have given to help them on their way. For the next six months, they’ll be following HFG healthy eating planners, combined with regular exercise. In addition, they’re each being mentored by dietitians from online health network Isoshealth and attending exercise classes run by (find out more about both on p22). They’ll also be toning up with the help of our weekly motivational exercises (find them at To keep a record of their meals, sleep and activity, each dieter is using a Jawbone Up3 activity tracker.

And we won’t abandon them on their weight-loss journeys – you can follow their progress here each month, and we’ll also be posting regular updates at If you want to join in, too, you’ll find diet advice on trimming your waistline on p24, as well as on our website.

It’s all about the waist

Expert opinion has moved on from BMI (although it remains a useful general guide). HFG expert and chair of the National Obesity Forum David Haslam explains: ‘The standard method of assessing whether or not someone is obese is by checking their BMI, which combines measures of height and weight to assess a person’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease and other long-term conditions.
