You never regret doing exercise, but motivation can be hard to find - particularly if you’re doing it alone. But here’s another reason why you should: it boosts your immune system. It’s generally agreed that regular moderate exercise helps your immunity, but scientists have differed over the effects of more arduous exercise, with some believing it can, in fact, suppress immune function. However, a new study says there is insufficient evidence for this. Physiologists Dr James Turner and Dr John Campbell from the University of Bath say that, in the short term, exercise can help the immune system deal with pathogens, and in the long term, regular exercise slows down changes that happen to the immune system with ageing. The bottom line: if you want to work out for longer, you can without worry. And if you don’t, just moving more will still be beneficial.
