Fibre may not be as sexy as bulletproof coffee or CBD cocktails, but if you’re looking to eat healthily, it plays a more fundamental role than whatever the latest hip ingredient may be. Eating plenty of fibre is associated with a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and bowel cancer - but most of us don’t get enough of it, munching only about 18g a day compared to the recommended 30g. And if you’re still not loading up your plate with veggies, perhaps this will convince you: a diet high in fibre was linked with a reduced incidence of breast cancer in a recent analysis of all relevant studies. The researchers pooled data from 20 observational studies, and discovered that individuals with the highest fibre consumption had an eight per cent lower risk of breast cancer. It all contributes to the evidence that lifestyle factors, such as what we choose to eat, may affect breast cancer risk.
