Back in the early 2000s, Linux finally coped with reliable handling of Microsoft Office files – that was achieved thanks to the progress in Wine development. As early as prior to its 1.0 release, Wine could already run Office 97 and 2000 with little or no issues. Roughly 20 years on from that story, the compatibility of Office files between Windows and Linux is still an active topic for discussion. For instance, the author of Visum asserts that there’s still no perfect way to open Microsoft Office files in Linux these days. He thinks running fully fledged suites like LibreOffice or WPS results in storing too many rarely needed megabytes on his drive, while running the Windows version of the Office suite with Wine isn’t much different either.
