Because these are manually installed distributions, the quality of the installation guide is of paramount importance. We’ll start with the fundamentals because a good layout is appreciated. By this, we mean clearly marked sections that, preferably, can be jumped between. A massive wall of blandlooking text wears thin pretty quickly in this sort of situation, so we also like to see good use of colour and formatting.
We like to see a full explanation of what we’re typing actually does, even if we have to follow links to other parts of the documentation in order to do so. Assumption of knowledge can be a problem with a guide that is overly light on details, because you could end up in a situation where you’re typing in commands and don’t have any idea of what they mean. This means that you’re prone to getting stuck at one stage or another, and it also means that you’re not actually learning anything about how the distribution works.
