When I started thinking about writing this editorial I was struck by the challenge of what I could say about 2018. It has been a time of celebrations and change, yet also a period of uncertainly regarding the future of the UK, the NHS and the mental health nurse.
First, I want to reflect upon NHS70. One of the nation’s most loved and praised institutions, the NHS turned 70 on 5 July 2018. I was lucky enough to attend the exclusive NHS70 celebration event at Westminster Abbey. This was an incredible and awe-inspiring opportunity to recognise and celebrate the extraordinary role the institution and the heroes who serve us from cradle to grave. The NHS70 event also highlighted the pride I feel in my role as a mental health nurse. I strive to fight stigma, challenge positively and seek to always collaborate with my service users to be least restrictive and help them achieve their goals.
