Railway Magazine  |  April 2016

THE inaugural main line run following the overhaul of ‘A3’ No. 60103 Flying Scotsman on February 25 was always going to draw massive crowds to the East Coast Main Line. As expected, hordes flocked to see the spectacle, but sadly it resulted in thousands trespassing on the lineside, including one man being photographed in a folding chair, feet on the ballast shoulder of the down slow. Some stood with young children on or very near the up fast, while others straddled the public crossings over this 125mph railway, their backs to oncoming traffic (see p98).

The incidents were so serious that ‘Scotsman’ was temporarily halted on safety grounds. I can see you shaking your heads in disbelief and asking what makes apparently sensible adults want to stand on an operational high-speed railway line and risk death, rather than find a place of safety to watch the special moment. The scenes were reminiscent of similar mass trespass when ‘Scotsman’ ran from Peterborough to York in 1983, and also ‘A1’ Tornado’s initial runs – again on the ECML.

Knowing that images were taken of many offenders, I expected some British Transport Police (BTP) prosecutions that would raise the profile of the dangers of trespass.

However, I am shocked to learn the BTP is doing exactly nothing over the ECML trespass...

Railway Magazine

I thoroughly enjoy the magazine every month. Some of the adverts are a bit annoying, e.g. the preposterous Flying Scotsman novelty clocks and other merchandise, but I can appreciate that advertising revenue is no doubt vital. It's a shame the online archive price was hiked so much after the first year, as it is very interesting to explore, but I cannot justify it at the current price. Reviewed Monday, March 30, 2020
