Artist Kate Louise Powell on provoking positive change

I’ve been vegan for three and a half years, but have only been an activist for two, and I aim to get more involved. I went vegan after being exposed to animal rights conversations and ‘real life vegans’ soon after starting my foundation year at Leeds College of Art. When I moved to Edinburgh I met more activists and animal rights became a much larger focus in my life — it is now the sun which everything else orbits around. I’ve just graduated with an illustration BA Hons degree from Edinburgh College of Art, and now I am planning to dedicate even more time and energy to animal rights and other social justice causes. Over the past year I have immersed myself in the world of sabotaging fox hunts and this is a form of activism that has really shifted my perspective on life — it has shown me the true importance of being on the front line of animal abuse and doing everything humanly possible to stop it.

About Vegan Life

Welcome to our September issue! It’s hard to believe autumn is just round the corner – it’s still feeling pretty balmy out, which is great for making the most of being outdoors. This issue we’ve rounded up some delicious lunch recipes to take outside, where to pick up the best on-the-go vegan food and how to make the most of your lunch hour – crucial while the weather is still so favourable. We have so many inspiring vegan contributors this month. The Scary Dairy expose by Viva!, is a tough but essential read. Juliet Gellatley and her brave team work tirelessly to help share the truth about the brutal industry and campaign for change. Our artist of the month is Kate Louise Powell, an activist who is spreading the vegan message and provoking positive change through her powerful pieces of art. Be sure to catch our interview with the Ven. Alma Shri Sadhu Dharmavira – a vegan Buddhist monk who explains the importance of living compassionately and gives us an insight into his extraordinary life. Enjoy the issue!
