Bestselling poet Wendy Cope put it bluntly.

She was ‘pissed off ‘ by those who dismissed her poetry as second rate because it was funny.

Wendy, 72, whose fifth collection, Anecdotal Evidence, was published in March by Faber, told Leaf Arbuthnot, of The Sunday Times: ‘There’s a feeling in the poetry world that if you write poems that make people laugh, it’s somehow cheating.
