Most coaches tell their players to not waste their time sliding into first base, believing it actually slows the runner down. In Game 5 of the 1962 World Series, the Yankees’ Bobby Richardson slid safely into first base just ahead of the throw to San Francisco Giants first baseman (and Hall of Famer) Willie “Stretch” McCovey, who used every bit of his 6-4 frame to try and reach the late throw. The Series went the full seven games, with the Yankees winning 4 games to 3.
