Adrian Magson talks to the prize-winning WM subscriber whose debut novel was inspired by a visit to a run-down house that had originally been built by her father

Inspiration for author and WM subscriber Vasundra Tailor’s debut novel, The Secret of Elephants (Lake Union Publishers, September 2022), came following a visit to India in 2016. The trip included a visit with her sister to see a mansion built by her father in Navsari in 1954.
‘He was immensely proud of it,’ Vasundra recalls, ‘but after 62 years, it was in a very dilapidated state. We were sad to see it like that. A lovely family invited us in when we explained our connection, and seeing the place brought back wonderful childhood memories. Later, I began to wonder about the lives of the families living in the building, and the germ of an idea began to form in my mind…’
