Pace yourself
There are parallels between writing projects and setting off for a long walk, says
Adrian Magson
Ina moment of light-headedness, I once saw writing as being like taking a long walk. I think it was the long bit that came to mind. How long it took to think of something cogent to write; how long it took to actually write the thing; and the length of time it took to sell the idea to hardened agents and editors.
The comparison came about after I completed a series of 20-25-mile walks over several weeks. Perhaps it was hysteria. Or pain. My wife was practising for the London Moon Walk at the time (marathon length around London, obvs) and needed company and, well… I was it.
Going for a walk, I thought. Easy enough; great company, country lanes, fresh air –what was not to like?
