WRITING LIFE
IN THE SPOTLIGHT: YOUR WRITING
Getting you know you
Creating character is one of the most fascinating aspects of the writing process, and often the basis for the most intriguing and compelling work. The WM writers responded to the ‘Getting to Know You’ call for submissions with alacrity, sending us a packed mailbox. We were thrilled with original writing styles and approaches that introduced us to a wide range of characters. This call stood out for its perceptive and insightful writing, reflecting imaginative responses to each writer’s chosen character that brought them to life on the page. As ever, it’s been a hard task to pick the ones we publish, but the two you’ll find feature memorable writing and characters who left a lingering, haunting impression. I hope you’ll enjoy meeting them as much as I did.

POETRY
Unwelcome Guest
By Gill Hawkins
It seemed insignificant at first, your arrival – unannounced, I was unrehearsed to welcome a faceless companion, without compassion or understanding. You grew into me and overflowed, intruding my space with discordant echoes that intensified to a cruel crescendo.
