For me, a structured writing day is a pipedream,’ says thriller author and barrister Tony Kent. ‘Being a criminal barrister can be extremely unpredictable and so having a set pattern for working on my “side passion project” of writing is impossible. Instead, I find time to write whenever I can, which takes more discipline than I’d ever expected. An hour or two in the evening is a given, but it’s also not enough so I have to be alive to grabbing moments when I can: train journeys, breaks between court hearings, those uncertain periods of time spent waiting for juries to come back. Far from ideal, but I’ve grown used to it.
