The way things were

Chaplin Books is an independent publisher of social history books.

‘Chaplin Books got started in 2010 – entirely by accident,’ said publisher Amanda Field. ‘I’d spent a long career in corporate communications, producing staff newspapers and magazines, and decided to give it up in favour of academic study. I saw in a local paper that someone was compiling a book about memories of Woolworth’s: it sounded interesting so I volunteered to copy-edit the book for a modest fee. When it was done, the compiler confessed he had no money at all, and I heard myself saying “I’ll publish it, then!” And that became the start of Chaplin Books. The Wonder of Woolies is still our bestselling title.’
