Tackling family life when it turns toxic makes for a tense second novel for Gilly MacMillan, she tells Chris High
It has been quite a year for Gilly MacMillan. Her debut novel, Burnt Paper Sky, was acclaimed on publication last August and nominated for an International Thriller Writers Award.
Now Gilly has published her second novel, The Perfect Girl (Piatkus), which is very different and covers – to some extent – how we perceive our children’s abilities, family values, or the lack of them. As a result, its atmosphere is incredibly tense and quite dark. Everybody involved has an input; a creative process which had its effects on Gilly both as a writer and as a mother.
