Aeroplane  |  No.486 The Grace Spitfire
Over the past several years Avro Vulcan B.2 XH558/G-VLCN The Spirit of Great Britain has impressed many thousands of people at air shows and other events the length and breadth of the country. It was thought that this year could have been the last flying season for the V-bomber, but
Vulcan to the Sky has recently launched Operation 2015, which is planned to release sufficient additional flying hours for XH558 to continue flying until 2015. To be able to fl y in 2014 and 2015, XH558 needs to be given a strengthening modification to the leading edges of its wings. This will be done after the Vulcan’s winter servicing programme, but in order to be ready to fly at the beginning of the 2014 season the parts for the modification must be designed and made this year. Therefore Vulcan to the Sky needs to raise £400,000 by November 2013. Anyone wishing to support the fundraising effort can do so by making a pledge of £10 or more and then donating the sum pledged by November. Alternatively, for £75 or more your name will be added inside XH558’s bomb-bay doors. There are other ways to support Operation 2015 too, just turn to the advertisement on page 25 to find out more. Here at Aeroplane we are launching a new initiative of our own. The Aeroplane; 75 Years Ago will reproduce in digital form all the editorial pages of the weekly issues of The Aeroplane from 1938 as well as all the advertisement pages redolent of a bygone world.
