Approximately 60 million light years away, the galaxies NGC 4567 and NGC 4568 are colliding and merging. Aptly nicknamed the Butterfly Galaxies, this cosmic collision, located in the constellation Virgo, gives us an insight into the eventual fate of the Milky Way. Scientists believe that our home galaxy will undergo a similar encounter with our neighbouring galaxy Andromeda. This image was captured by the FOcal Reducer and low dispersion Spectrograph 2 (FORS 2) instrument mounted on the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) at the Paranal Observatory in the Chilean Andes.
