The holidays are over, but we're going to show you how to ho-ho-ho on the highway all winter!

This issue of AMERICAN ROAD takes the Fellow in Red Flannel as its theme. Our tribute begins with “Santa Claus Lane”—a feature that showcases Kris Kringle attractions around the country. We introduce you to Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland in central Michigan—the largest holiday store in the world—and make merry at the one-of-a-kind Santa Claus Museum in southern Indiana. Did you know there’s an icy North Pole that can be found year-round in Wilmington, New York? Or that the Great Humbug Adventure in Jefferson, New Hampshire, is the best way to get a jump on your holiday Dickens? You didn’t? Well, get with it, you Scrooge.

“Toyland Grown-Up” reveals how Christmas theme parks took root on the West Coast, beginning at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition. We follow US 10 to Santa Claus School, US 6 to A Christmas Story House, and US 20 to the It’s a Wonderful Life Bridge. Then we drop by California’s old Holiday Inn (with an ear perked to catch Bing Crosby’s buh-buh-boo) and tip our magic hat to Minnesota’s big snowman, frigid but friendly in North St. Paul. For an encore, we deliver a treat to all who love sugar plums: a trip to the Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum in Washington state.
