Design geeks like us always eagerly await the announcement of Pantone’s Color of the Year. It’s such a fun way to think about trends not only in the art world but also in society at large. Pantone researchers make their yearly color choice by looking at a variety of influences, including traveling art collections, new artists, films and TV shows in production, fashion, popular travel destinations and socio-economic conditions. For example, the year 2020 saw Classic Blue as the pick, which indicated some traditional styles of decorating were coming back into fashion. In 2021, there was the controversial choice of two colors—gasp!—includ ing Ultimate Gray and Illuminating (a sunny yellow). Pantone says it chose the Ultimate Gray as an emblem of strength, and Illuminating for positivity in dark times. This year’s Color of the Year, Very Peri is “a dynamic periwinkle blue hue with a vivifying violet red undertone.”
