WE SAY: After years of smaller sofa styles being more favored, modular (AKA sectional), sofas have regained popularity. And unlike some trends—straight-leg jeans, bangs, Squid Game—sectionals are versatile and can work well in a variety of settings. Modular sofas are associated with Midcentury Modern design, but are older and in fact, some were already being made in the U.S. pre-Civil War. (For more on the intriguing history of sectionals, check out the story “Defined: Sectional Sofas” in our Winter 2021 issue.) Lately, 1970s-inspired curved furniture has been making a comeback, and modular sofas are following suit with daring, imaginative shapes.
