Q: I have Crohn’s disease, and have never had anal sex as I’m too afraid. Is this something I should avoid, or am I worrying too much? Alexander, Durham
A: Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory condition that can affect the digestive tract anywhere from the mouth to the anus. If you do have symptoms of pain, bleeding or ulceration around the anus, then anal sex is going to be painful and best avoided. I’d suggest that you start to gently experiment with yourself to see if you do experience any sort of pain from penetration, and lead slowly on from that. You should never do it if you’re in any sort of pain.
