THE GENERATOR GAP
The experience of staying at a hostel has changed a lot in the past decade. The days of overstuffed dormitories that smell of backpacker’s socks are (mostly) in the past — and design-led hostel brands such as Generator are leading the way. This April, they open their 13th European property, in Madrid, where they’ve transformed a car park built in the 1930s into a trendy hostel with 129 rooms sleeping two, four or eight people. Whichever room you choose to bunk down in, hostels are all about the hangout areas and the newest Generator will be doing hang outs in style with a rooftop terrace, whirlpool spas, a high-ceilinged, open-plan lobby decorated with local art, and a restaurant and bar that have a retro-industrial feel.
