“NOT A SECOND GOES BY WITHOUT A BULLSEYE TARGETED AND RIDICULED”
IF YOU HAD TOLD ME six months ago that the TV talking points of early 2018 would be Will & Grace and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, I’d have shot you a withering glance integral to the camp pulse of both shows, and fired back a catty rejoinder. Where did you step out of? 2003? Yet here we are.
The original incarnations of both shows answered the question: at what cost will mainstream American gay visibility come? It turned out to be quite high. Will & Grace could have been titled “Faghag: The Sitcom”. It posited the idea that the most fulfilling relationship gay men can hope to achieve was with a straight woman who couldn’t find love of her own.
