In a recent UK poll, 95 per cent of people felt tour operators should change the way they work with attractions featuring whales and dolphins. Following recent studies and documentaries, such as Blackfish, which revealed the often-cruel conditions these cetaceans live in, Virgin Holidays has invested $300,000 (£215,000) in the nonprofit National Aquarium, in Baltimore, to help create North America’s first dolphin sanctuary. The plan is to move seven captive dolphins to a larger, outdoor natural environment, complete with ocean tides, temperature variations and other ocean life such as fish, crabs and seaweed. The sanctuary is expected to be completed by 2020 and Virgin Holidays hopes it will be based in Florida, making it relatively easy for British tourists to take full advantage of the new attraction.
