A WHOLE LOTTA SHAKIN’ GOIN’ ON
It’s now commonplace to pack a recovery shake in your bag along with your headphones, towel, trainers and maybe some lippy for special occasions. This month, I was lucky enough to try out several different ranges from MaxiNutrition. But how many of us really know why we have a recovery shake, what should go in it, or even what it does for us?
When consumed, proteins are broken down into amino acids, absorbed into the bloodstream and transported to where they are needed in the body, to repair and grow tissue. Current recommended daily allowance of protein to maintain weight is 0.8g for every 1kg of body weight. So if you are 80kg (176lb), your body needs 64g (141lb) of protein per day. But for those wanting to increase their lean muscle mass, the figure is said to be between 1.4g and 1.8g per 1kg.
