It had been a tumultuous few years in Tina Turner’s career in the lead-up to the singer’s fifth studio album. Separated from musical partner and husband Ike, Turner struggled to find her feet as she explored new sonic landscapes. Her prior attempts had failed to capture the attention of audiences at the time. Then, in 1983, she met music A&R John Carter who, despite opposition from Capitol Records, helped relaunch her career. She was on an uncharted path to becoming a bonafide solo star in her mid-forties.
