SAVING SEEDS FROM FAVOURITE FLOWERS AND VEG
Seed saving is a time-honoured summer activity that’s firmly back in fashion, if the number of people queuing up at seed swap events is anything to go by. It saves money, enables gardeners to have an element of control over self-seeding plants, allows friends to share annuals, biennials and certain perennials and, in some cases, can be an insurance policy against anything happening to a cherished parent plant. Long used by vegetable growers to encourage land races, vegetables that adapt to suit particular environments and to preserve heritage varieties, seed saving is also a lot of fun. After all, few things can beat the thrill of growing a plant from material you’ve collected yourself.
