An 1894 pencil drawing of a street in Antwerp by Walter Frederick Osborne (1859-1903) was among the last contents offered at auction from West Horsley Place, the Grade I-listed mansion in Surrey owned by historian and broadcaster Bamber Gascoigne.
The sale was held at nearby Gorringe’s (21% buyer’s premium) of Lewes on January 8, nearly three years after Sotheby’s dispersed the bulk of the collection for £8.86m.
It featured residual pictures, silver, ceramics and furniture from the estate’s attics, sculleries and outhouses, mostly assembled by Gascoigne’s late great-aunt, Mary Innes-Ker, the Duchess of Roxburghe.
