THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN
Hailee Steinfeld, Blake Jenner, Woody Harrelson
→ She may be better known these days for being the next up-and-coming pop star, but the multi-talented and Oscar-nominated Hailee Steinfeld is back in the cinema with this fantastic coming-of-age comedy. High school is always tough but for Nadine (Steinfeld), life becomes all the more complicated when her best friend starts dating her brother. Fast paced, well-written and superbly acted, this is the best teen comedy we’ve had in years. There may not be much we haven’t seen before in terms of plot but, thanks to debut writer-director Kelly Fremon Craig, this wins for its authentic female voice and for having a pulse on today’s culture. Nadine, as a character, feels so finely drawn and is so relatable that it becomes impossible to find much not to love. 30 November
