Australian Railway History  |  January 2026
Long time ARH writers Jim Longworth and Frank Johnson have submitted a series of interesting articles that neatly come under the title of track workers who build, inspect, maintain and repair New South Wales railways. Without the hard work of many fettlers and gangs, trains could not complete their journeys, maintain safety and efficiency across a vast and often remote rail network. Its easy to forget the that before our favourite locomotive and train can run there does need to be planning, building and afterward maintaining. Not all the articles could fit in this issue but we read with interest Fettling the Length, A Brief History of Rail Welding in NSW to 2001 and Mechanisation of Track Maintenance in NSW. John Dare also writes on 50 Years since the First Annual National Conference of the Australian Railway Historical Society, January 1976 in Box Hill, Victoria but also the Conference excursions to Belgrave and Geelong.
