More than just a drink

Think coffee only has the one use? Think again. It turns out that coffee beans can be recycled to heat your home. Bio Beans have created Coffee Logs by taking the grounds from 25 cups of coffee and packing them into logs that are perfect for wood-burners and multi-fuel stoves to create a sustainable way of heating your home. This is a genius solution to the 95 million cups of coffee which are consumed in the UK each day and leave behind thousands of tonnes of ground bean waste. In case you were wondering, your home won’t smell like a coffee shop either as the logs are odourless when burnt. £7.99 from

Bags of style

Vegan leather is rapidly becoming more and more popular, helping both animals and the planet. And one brand we think you’re set to love is ThreeSixFive – who have a range of accessories from bags to phone cases, notebooks to wallets, all made from sustainably-sourced fabric and materials. Plus, you can even personalise some items. Founder of the company, Tiffany Watson, tells us more. “After I made the decision to stop wearing and using leather, I realised there was a real gap in the market for premium vegan leather stationery and accessories, and I wanted to provide an amazing alternative for people. The name ThreeSixFive came to me one day – I wanted to build a brand of accessories that could be used every day and our first creation was a diary, so I thought the name ThreeSixFive fitted perfectly.” Tiffany explains that ThreeSixFive products are all made from PU fibre. “Our diaries are made from this leather alternative and are sewn at the spine instead of using fish glue, which is what most other diaries use. We also use recycled paper in our stationery products and recycled packaging where possible. We’re definitely not perfect, but we are trying to make a difference and show people that there are good quality alternatives out there.”

About Be Kind

Hello, Looking back over 2019, if there is one person who has made their presence and message known, it’s Greta Thunberg. The passionate girl who skipped school to protest climate change has seen unprecedented media attention and created a movement bigger than anyone could have expected. At the tender age of 16 years old, she has achieved more than most will in their lifetimes. But she’s not the only one standing up for what they believe in and creating positive change. This issue we have rounded up some of our heroes of the past year, from Leonardo DiCaprio to Genesis Butler, and we are so grateful to these people for using their platforms for good. But it isn’t just the big names that need celebrating. Since the start of Be Kind, we have given the spotlight to the smaller, but no less significant, names doing their bit to improve the planet and the lives of those on it. We have met some truly wonderful, selfless people who work tirelessly to create a better world. So, to all the brilliant beings setting up and running zero-waste shops, to the soup kitchens making sure homeless people receive a hot meal, to the lift sharers, the litter pickers, the plastic-free period campaigners, the animal lovers, the bee protectors, the food-waste fighters, the cruelty-free cosmetic brands, and all those trying to put a smile on the faces of those having a rough time, we thank you. The time you give up, the things you do and the messages you share make a real difference. And kindness is catching, so let’s keep spreading joy into 2020. Have a very merry Christmas, Phillipa Editor
