It was a privilege to be able to learn from someone who’s shot at the pinnacle of the sport for so long, but sobering, too, as John revealed the immense pressures there are on elite athletes and the tolls they can take. He didn’t try and sugar-coat the lows that followed the highs, or smooth over the rough patches, and was candid about his own struggles and how he got through them.
