Building with SIPs
With great performance values, design potential and ease of construction, SIPs are a popular solution for self builders. Erika Chaffey explores the range of benefits and practical considerations attached to this construction method
Designed, fabricated and installed by SIPS @Clays using its Kingspan TEK building system (featuring 142mm-deep panels), this sustainable barn-style home relies solely on wind and solar energy

Structural insulated panels (SIPs) have become a go-to option for those looking to build a sustainable and energy-efficient home. The panels are manufactured from an insulating foam core sandwiched between two structural facings, typically oriented strand board (OSB). This process forms a super strong, high-performance building envelope that can be used for the walls, roof and floors of your home.
SIPs are engineered offsite under controlled factory conditions. Once manufactured, they’re delivered on site, where the superstructure is quickly assembled. Suited to a range of plots and design goals, we take a look at what you need to know when considering this system for your project.
