Whichever way you slice it, Sister Rosetta Tharpe was an agent of pure revolution. Black, female, divorced, queer, singing the gospel and riffing on a distorted Gibson electric at nightclub guitar battles in downtown New York: these were not taboos to be busted lightly in the late 1930s, but Tharpe broke down the barriers with an easy smile.
