Look for ways to visually open the space. There are many ways to open up a space that feels small. Removing a wall for an open concept look is one example. Open shelving is another feature that also lends classic cottage charm. James chose both these options, as well as a less traditional choice: “I decided to paint the shelving black, because it gives it depth and makes it feel more spacious,” he says.
