GROUND ZERO

A BIKE SHOP BUILDS A SLAMMED DIESEL

As we were shooting photos, the lingering question remained: Why did a shop that builds customized motorcycles have a lowered 1st Generation Dodge in the crosshairs of our lens? The answer was simple—everybody needs a shop truck! It all started at SEMA with James Patience, the owner of Ground Zero Customs in Ammon, Idaho. “There were just so many new trucks with bolt-on parts, especially new Fords,” commented James. “We wanted to do something different, and an old square body Dodge Ram seemed like just the right thing to paddle against the tide,” says James.

James lived up to the name of the shop and started at the bottom. “The whole truck was taken apart, all the bushings were replaced, and all the little things like the headlights, taillights, moldings, and trim pieces were replaced with new pieces from LMC,” says James. But that still wasn’t enough. The old Dodge had to be capable of towing nearly everything, at any weight. To this end, that meant that single rear-wheel D250 needed an upgrade. While the original ‘92 Dana 70 rearend was strong, it wasn’t going to handle gooseneck trailers any time soon. A Dana 80 might have been the right strength, but they were super wide. A solution was found in a 14-bolt rear out of an ‘86 1-ton dually. It had 4.10 gears, a posi, and was just about the right width for James’ ride.
