The Companion Chronicles: The Second Doctor Volume 1

RRP £25 (CD), £20 (download)

The four stories in this box set are essentially plays in miniature, with the cast sharing narration duties and other parts as well as their familiar roles.

The Mouthless Dead by John Pritchard is a strong opener, featuring Ben, Polly, and a younger, more superstitious Jamie in a creepy, atmospheric ghost story. As the TARDIS crashes into a steam train by a railway signal house, in England, 1920, they find themselves faced with nightmare visions of dead soldiers as a train approaches, carrying the body of the Unknown Warrior to his final resting place at Westminster Abbey. It’s a sober meditation on the price of war and those left behind, but has a happy ending of sorts.
