The 1960s is an endlessly fascinating decade for so many of us who missed the party. Take the summer of 1966, for example. In July, England won the World Cup, beating West Germany 4-2. In August, The Beatles released Revolver, an album that many now regard as the pinnacle of their extraordinary career. And in September, filming began on The Power of the Daleks, Patrick Troughton’s first story as Doctor Who.
I expect I’m the first person to mention The Power of the Daleks in the same breath as these mighty sporting and cultural achievements but, aside from their proximity, all three events have something in common – they’re all considered more important now than they were at the time.
