The Fourth Doctor Season 18 Costume

The style of Doctor Who took a dramatic departure for Season 18 in 1980. This reinvention extended to the Doctor himself…
Cosplayer Peter Nolan in his Season 18 Fourth Doctor costume.

Every Doctor’s costume has evolved between their first and last stories. Sometimes it’s only a minimal change, as when Peter Davison swapped his cricket jumper and stripy trousers for a slightly different cricket jumper and stripy trousers. Other times it’s a subtle streamlining or perfecting of the same basic idea, as with Patrick Troughton’s costume.

But it’s rare for a Doctor to pretty much throw out their original look in favour of a new one. Matt Smith did it, with only a love for bow ties surviving into the post-Amy Pond era. And Tom Baker famously did it. For his final season, the new broom of incoming producer John Nathan-Turner reinvented the show’s music and titles – even its approach to basic storytelling. JNT also commissioned costume designer June Hudson to come up with a whole new look for the Doctor. One in which only the concept of an impractically long scarf would endure.
