THE YEAR IS 1966. THE TARDIS ARRIVES IN LONDON, where the Doctor is known to the authorities as a leading scientist. With his companion Dodo, he receives a guided tour of the new Post Office Tower, where Professor Brett has installed a sentient super-computer called WOTAN. In four days’ time WOTAN will be linked to computer systems around the world to form a central intelligence of mechanical problem-solvers.

But WOTAN decides that the world cannot progress with mankind in charge and that machines must now take over. Brett falls under the influence of WOTAN’s thought control and soon others are recruited to the computer’s service, including Dodo. She is tasked with enlisting the Doctor to WOTAN’s think tank, accompanying him to the Inferno nightclub in Covent Garden with their new friend, Brett’s secretary Polly. There, they meet sailor Ben Jackson.
