Homegrown harvest
GROW WITH GAZ
The greenhouse Gaz built with his dad allows earlier sowings, so more crops are ready to plant out in May
Part 2
It’s warming up on the plot and in the greenhouse too, so join veg-growing chef Gaz Oakley as he sows seeds for delicious harvests all summer long
As I step into the month of April, I feel as if every sense is awakened by vibrant life springing up all around me. Sweet scent fills the air and there’s also some much-welcomed warmth.
This second instalment of my growalong series is all about the diverse seeds that I plan to sow this month, including some of the techniques I employ at my little Welsh homestead, and some of my top growing inspirations. One highlight includes a creative and delicious method for utilising carrot tops, rather than composting them, after thinning out the carrot patch in late spring.
I’m also showcasing my absolute favourite recipe for capturing the essence of April radishes, so you can enjoy their crisp, peppery flavour for months to come. Join me now as we embrace the beauty and bounty of April in the garden.

Stock up on water-saving mulches such as straw before things get too busy on the plot
Spring is finally in full swing.
I love April because lots of the hard work of sowing seeds in March is coming to fruition and those baby seedlings are ready to plant out or pot on. I love the look of my garden towards the end of April. Everything looks so organised, with neat rows of baby plants in the freshly mulched beds, there’s a sense of excitement for the coming summer months before the garden explodes into full growth.
