I like February. I know it’s freezing outside and gets dark early but when I see snowdrops flowering it’s a sign that the growing season is about to begin and everything is brighter from here on out – albeit with a few final blasts of cold still to come!
Now is our chance to sow some crops indoors and to really think about the growing year ahead. I’m excited about seeing seedlings lining our windowsills, followed by flowers and an abundance of crops again outdoors. Just thinking about it now is filling me with hope and happiness.
As a nature-conscious gardener, I disturb the soil as little as possible, using no-dig principles. Soil is home to much more wildlife than we first believed, with 59 per cent of life on earth now thought to be living there.
Digging less cuts down on effort and largely revolves around annual mulching with organic matter to feed soil organisms. Follow along with me each month as I explain my techniques for boosting soil and saving effort.
If your leeks are multi-sown, harvest the pairs together or the one left may rot
