Welcome to the Pride edition of GCN!
This year is a special one as we mark many queer milestones - 50 years of LGBTQ+ activism in Ireland, the 40th anniversary of the march to Fairview Park in Dublin, the 35th birthday of GCN, and 30 years since homosexuality was decriminalised in Ireland.
That beautiful cover by Hazel Coonagh shows sportswoman Giulia Valentino who features in a very special collaboration with the Rowan Trust and the Hope and Courage Collective which platforms community voices calling for solidarity during this time of concern for the LGBTQ+ community.
Megastar Niall Horan pops by to talk about the power of music and his new album – The Show. We celebrate 20 years of the LGBTQ+ youth service Belong To and 13 years of the iconic Mother Club. Tonie Walsh takes us on a tour of Pride history, we detail the new All Ireland LGBTQIA+ Forum, Outhouse shares its future plans and MPOWER celebrates its incredible volunteers. Expect important discussions on the housing crisis, accessibility for Pride events, education equality and the rise in hate crime. There’s lots of fun stuff, including peeps at a gorgeous new exhibition, DublOUT and the queer musical, Fun Home. There are essential pieces on the pressure of achieving the ‘Pride Body’ and the importance of consent in healthy sex lives. We wrap up this jam packed Pride issue with a special message from the one and only Ailbhe Smyth.
Have a safe and happy Pride!
