A prince’s tour of India, 1875 –76
In the winter of 1875, the future king Edward VII embarked upon a tour of the Indian subcontinent. During his four-month visit, he was presented with hundreds of intricately-crafted gifts, some of the finest examples of Indian design and craftsmanship at the time. On his return to Britain, the prince arranged for the gifts to tour the UK, with the exhibition The Prince of Wales’s India Collection attracting an audience of more than two million people.
