Weekend in Turin

A bastion of Slow Food, historical home of the Fiat and Italy’s inaugural (if short-lived) capital: Turin is an underrated delight for weekending culture cravers and food lovers.

The Mole Antonelliana against a backdrop of Alpine peaks

The renovated Egyptian Museum has the most important collection of Egyptian treasure outside Cairo. Highlights include a fine statue of Ramses II and the world’s largest papyrus collection (museoegizio. it; Via Accademia delle Scienze 6; 9am-2pm Mon, 9am-6.30pm Tue-Sun; £11.50). Afterwards, stroll to central Piazza Castello, dominated by the part-medieval, part-Baroque Palazzo Madama.

Named for its most famous barfly, the Count of Cavour, this beautiful upstairs drinking room combines a magical, mirrored setting with a great collection of contemporary art. Drop by for an aperitivo - Italy’s famed pre-dinner drink and snack. If it’s too difficult to tear yourself away from such luxury, there’s a bar menu until midnight (; Piazza Carignano 2; 7pm-1.30am Mon-Sat, to midnight Sun; cocktails from £11).
