Mini Magazine  |  May 2018
This month our lead cover car is Alex Austin’s 1979 Clubman. Appearances can be deceptive, as on first look this looks like a nicely restored and modified standard car. Open the bonnet and this Mini hides a surprise - Yamaha R1 bike power! This means 146bhp at a heady 9270rpm and a 135mph top speed and it looks so innocent!
We all dream of finding that illusive Mk1 Mini project rotting unloved on a drive, well Aaron Page was lucky enough to find one of these projects and it’s an ultra-rare 1071 Cooper S! Sadly most of the important Cooper S bits had been removed, but Aaron’s gone on to rebuild this Mini to period spec, with many tasty Downton parts.
How do you follow that? Well how about one of the earliest Austin Seven Deluxes in Ireland? Plus, Tom Gier’s 80s custom saloon that has risen from the rust of his old TPi Mini.
We’ve also got the latest instalment on our gearbox rebuild, a full report on the Italian Job Tour, Retromobile and The London Classic Car Show. Your latest tech questions answered and the low down on how to keep you Mini cool in our guide.
